Two papers at an upcoming engineering conference promise to take image sensors in new directions.
The image sensor market leader Sony Corp. is due to report on an improved CMOS image sensor that uses a curved substrate to improve the image fidelity and reduce the dark current. At the same event, the Symposium on VLSI Technology, which takes place June 9-12 in Honolulu,engineers from TSMC will report on a CMOS image sensor with a 3D stacked architecture.

Surgeons at the University Medical Center at Utrecht University in The Netherlands have successfully replaced a woman's skull with a 3D-printed replica.
Led by brain surgeon Bon Verweij, MD, the surgical team labored 23 hours in the operating room to replace the woman's skull with one made of acrylic

Honda has announced plans to test in live traffic a driver-assist system designed to warn drivers of upcoming traffic signals and do something about them even if the driver isn't prepared to.
The version of its driver-assist system Honda is testing uses onboard GPS systems and infrared sensors that recognize landmark IR beacons along the road to give the car's navigation system an accurate estimate of where it is and the status of a traffic signal it may be approaching.

Xbox One YouTube App Gets Improved Game Video Sharing

Microsoft revealed today that a YouTube app update — which is rolling out tomorrow — will streamline how to upload game clips to the service.
"We’re rolling out an update to the YouTube app on Xbox One that integrates Game DVR and Upload with YouTube, making it easier than ever to capture and share game clips with the world," Microsoft said in a press release. Game DVR and Upload Studio are reportedly two of the most used apps on Xbox One, and the YouTube app update supposedly makes sharing game highlights as simple as a button click to upload to a user's YouTube channel.

ET learns while Volkswagen has moved from a "consideration stage" to "final stage" of approval for development of the sub-4 meter project, while Japanese car maker Nissan Motor India has commissioned a study to explore potential of entering the sub-4 metre sedan (Sunny) and SUV segment. 

Qualcomm reveals 64-bit Snapdragon 810 and 808

snapdragon primaryQualcomm is getting high on 64-bit chips with its fastest ever Snapdragon processor, which will render 4K video, support LTE Advanced and could run the 64-bit Android OS.
The new Snapdragon 810 is the company’s “highest performing” mobile chip for smartphones and tablets, Qualcomm said in a statement. Mobile devices with the 64-bit chip will ship in the first half of next year, and be faster and more power-efficient. Snapdragon chips are used in handsets with Android and Windows Phone operating systems, which are not available in 64-bit form yet.

Slew of Sony Xperia Z phones get KitKat 4.4.2 bug fix

Sony is now putting out a bug fix for the Xperia Z1, Xperia Z Ultra, and Xperia Z1 Compact; Firmware 14.3.A.0.757 takes the place of the former version (14.3.A.0.681).
What does the new version fix? The sound issue that has been plaguing users where noises from the handset were coming from the internal speaker instead of the external one. But Xperia Z users can now rejoice because they will be facing that problem no more.

AUO makes highest resolution AMOLED screen to date

AUO is about to debut their 513ppi AMOLED display made for smartphones. The unit boasts a WQHD (2560x1440) resolution, which is supposed to provide an amazing viewing experience.
The display they are showing off is a 5” AMOLED screen that measures 0.57mm in thickness. AUO hasn’t only worked on the screen’s resolution, however, but boasts that touchscreen usability will be improved as well as they’ve implemented a unique design that allows for 10-point touch support for, you know, in case you want to use both hands or feet to interact with your smartphone.
